High School: Grades 9–12

STEM³ Academy high school is rooted in an asset-based model. This matches the key skills and abilities of the students with the demands of the modern workforce. We provide a rigorous, integrated college preparatory curriculum that emphasizes the interconnections between science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the humanities.

Hallmarks of the High School Program

We offer 9 AP classes.
Offer collaborative teaching and learning environment specifically designed for students with autism, and other learning differences, learn best.
Partnerships with local companies that provide students with first-hand knowledge of varied STEM careers.
Juniors and seniors have the opportunity to intern to further develop their career interests and build their resumes.
Students develop a portfolio of their work that may include engineering projects, coding projects, robotics competitions, PowerPoints, music clips, video, etc that display their abilities.
Seniors can prepare a culminating trans-disciplinary honors project upon graduation. This allows them to apply their knowledge in some area of interest in a practical or experiential way.

High School Core Classes

English Language Arts

English 9: The study of a variety of literary genres, including works of poetry, drama, fiction and non-fiction
English 10: A focus on student writing, on their ability to craft essays both persuasive and comparative, as well as literary analysis
English 11: An intensive class for students to prepare for and take the AP English Literature and Composition exam
English 12: An intensive class for students to prepare for and take the AP English Language and Composition exam

Social Sciences

World History: Students study the major political, social, economic and religious movements of the Americas, Asia, Europe and Africa
U.S. History: A focus on the United States from colonial times to the present, with an emphasis on the analysis of original documents and student writing
Government and Economics: A study of the constitution, of civil liberties and civil rights, political culture and the institutions that are at the heart of the modern US government and politics. A survey of modern macro and micro economic theories are included.

Sciences

Biology: A study of the fundamental processes of living things
Physics: A study of motion, forces, optics, sound, electricity, magnetism, waves and nuclear physics
Chemistry: Students work on developing problem-solving skills and incorporate lab work in an understanding modern chemistry
Environmental Science: Students synthesize their understanding of biology, chemistry and physics in this lab-based class

Mathematics

Algebra 1: The focus is not only on the development of manipulative skills but on the application of skills learned
Geometry: A study in Euclidian geometry with the development of skills in theory and application
Algebra 2: A prelude to precalculus—students are introduced to a variety of topics. A graphing calculator is required.
Pre-calculus: Students are introduced to graphical, numeric and algebraic techniques for solving problems
